Die DADAistinnen (The DADAists)
Idea/Concept: Yuyoung Jin
“Die DADAistinnen” is a performance series in which Ensemble Rot engages with forgotten or lesser-known female Dada artists and interprets their art. The goal of the project is to present this art in an appreciative way and to make it more well known.
The title of the concert “The room of one’s own” is taken from the renowned essay of Virginia Woolf. The metaphor of one’s own room leads to the demand of one’s own discursive room in history and the right to a share in the field of cultural production.
The first concert “The room of one’s own I” portrays Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. After the premiere performance of “Die Baroness” (the baroness) in January 2018, the project was continued in the following year under the title “The room of one’s own II”. This time the group of female percussionists interpret works from Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Hannah Höch, which Ensemble Rot composed in collaboration with the Korean composer Areum Lee into a complete work with percussion and live-performance. With the aim of a diverse and intercultural artistic performance, two composition commissions and premieres were given to Daniel Chernov and Isabel Pardo.
